Important Information about Hurricane Relief

Dear friends,

This has been a devastating week for many of our brothers and sisters in the Houston area and along the Gulf Coast. We continue to pray for those whose lives have been affected by Hurricane Harvey. You have a unique opportunity to offer direct assistance to one of the overlooked areas that has been hit by this storm as they begin to rebuild.

Tomball is a suburb located north-west of Houston. They were directly impacted by the storm but not as badly as other places. This community is about the size of Melissa (10,000 residents or more) and will serve as a central location to provide assistance to surrounding areas, including Cypress, Waller, and Magnolia. The local United Methodist Church, Tomball UMC, is like our church in its heart for reaching out and serving the community. Their pastor, Rev. Russell Hall, and I attended seminary together. He is one of my closest colleagues and friends. He called yesterday to ask if we could help.

Over the coming weeks, we will be adopting Tomball UMC. We will be lifting them up in prayer, both daily at home and weekly in worship. We will be helping with specific needs as they arise within their church and community. Here’s how you can help right now:

  1. Pray for Tomball and surrounding areas. Pray particularly for families that will return to the area this weekend and begin to clean their homes.
  2. Donate blood on Sunday between 8-11 am. Our blood banks are running low and you can save a life. You can sign up here:
  3. Sponsor 1 or more cleaning buckets ($65 each) to be filled in worship on Sunday, September 3. We are encouraging each family to purchase a cleaning bucket for one or two families in need. This is a big goal! I am counting on you to listen for others who may want to help and to share this invitation with friends and family members who live across the country. Sponsorships can be made online by selecting “MUMC Hurricane Relief” at or at church on Sunday.

Our goal on September 3 is to fill 100 cleaning buckets for 100 families during our worship services! Sunday morning schedule will remain the same with worship services beginning at 9:30 and 11 am. Nursery will be provided for children ages 4 and under. We will sing, read scripture, and receive communion before continuing our worship by assembling cleaning buckets. Then, we will share in a delicious pancake breakfast at 10:30 am. I will be driving the buckets to Tomball UMC on Sunday evening so that they can be put to immediate use!

This is a moment when we get to BE the church! We talked last week about imagining more for our lives (John 10:10) and about being the light of the world?. We give to live into that promise. I am looking forward to being with you in worship on Sunday!
